After studying August Wilson's play, Fences, and Romare Bearden's style of abstract collages, I created a poster that embodied the setting Wilson portrays in his play as well as Bearden's distinct style. Each an artist in their own respect captures the serious issues of the civil rights movements and other important events and matters of African-Americans in the 1900s. With their inspirations in mind, I hoped to reflect the hardships of Wilson's characters in a style with distinct colors and textures and clean lines, much like Bearden used in his own artwork.
